Alvacraft LLC: Marine Upholstery & Canvas Care Guide
At Alvacraft LLC, we pride ourselves on delivering premium, high-performance upholstery built to handle everything the South Carolina Lowcountry throws at it. But even the finest marine-grade materials need the right care to survive our intense Charleston sun, high humidity, and salt air.
Follow this professional maintenance guide to keep your custom seats, Bimini tops, and boat covers looking crisp and performing flawlessly season after season on the water.
Part 1: Marine Vinyl Care & Maintenance
The marine-grade vinyl we use is highly engineered to resist moisture and mildew, protected by a specialized microscopic topcoat. Keeping this topcoat intact is the single most important part of vinyl longevity.
1. The Golden Rule: Avoid Household Chemicals
Never use harsh household cleaners on your boat seats.
-
The Danger: Products like dish soap, bleach, Dawn, Magic Erasers, or window cleaners strip the plasticizers right out of the vinyl.
-
The Result: The vinyl becomes brittle, turns yellow, and cracks prematurely. Furthermore, harsh chemicals will rot out even high-strength marine stitching over time.
2. Routine Post-Outing Rinse (Every Trip)
Every time you wrap up a day out on the Stono River, the harbor, or offshore, give your upholstery a quick refresh:
-
Rinse off salt spray, pluff mud, and sweat with clean, fresh water.
-
Wipe the seats down with a soft microfiber cloth and a mild, pH-neutral marine soap.
-
Dry thoroughly with a clean towel to prevent water spots and standing moisture in the seams.
3. Deep Cleaning & Lowcountry Mildew Removal
For ground-in dirt, fish blood, sunscreen grease, or early mildew spots brought on by our humid summers:
-
Spray a dedicated marine upholstery cleaner evenly over the surface.
-
Agitate gently using a soft-bristled nylon or natural horsehair brush. Never use a stiff brush or abrasive scrub pads.
-
Wipe away the lifted grime with a clean microfiber cloth and rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
4. UV Protection (Your Vinyl's Sunscreen)
Apply a premium marine UV protectant at least once a month during peak boating season down here.
-
Spray it onto clean, dry vinyl and buff it completely dry with a microfiber towel.
-
A proper marine protectant leaves a clean, non-sticky matte finish that repels water and prevents UV fading and cracking without making your seats dangerously slick.

Part 2: Bimini Tops & Boat Covers (Marine Canvas)
Whether we crafted your canvas using premier acrylics like Sunbrella® or heavy-duty marine polyesters, keeping them waterproof requires a different approach than vinyl. Canvas must remain breathable while completely shedding water.
1. Routine Canvas Cleaning
-
Brush away loose dirt, pollen, and salt crust before it gets ground into the weave.
-
Hose down the canvas with fresh water regularly.
-
For standard washing, use a mild marine fabric cleaner mixed with lukewarm water. Use a soft sponge or soft-bristled brush, then rinse completely until all soap residue is gone. Air dry only—never apply direct heat.
2. Heavy-Duty Stain & Mold Treatment
If a cover or Bimini top has accumulated heavy mold from standing rainwater or high humidity:
-
Use a specialized marine canvas cleaner designed to lift organic stains without damaging the fabric fibers.
-
Avoid straight bleach, as it weakens the heavy-duty structural threads holding your canvas seams together.
3. Restoring Water Repellency (Waterproofing)
From the factory, high-end marine canvas has a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish that makes water bead up and roll off. Between intense Charleston UV rays and regular washings, this coating wears down over time. If water starts soaking into your canvas rather than pooling on top, it’s time to re-treat it.
-
Clean the fabric thoroughly and allow it to dry completely.
-
In a well-ventilated area, spray a premium fabric water repellent in even, overlapping strokes.
-
Let the canvas cure for at least 6 to 12 hours before exposing it to rain or folding it up. This restores total waterproof protection and adds an extra layer of stain defense.
Recommended Canvas Care Products:

Best Canvas Cleaner: Star brite Sail & Canvas Cleaner or 303 Multi-Surface Cleaner

Best Waterproofing Treatment: 303 Marine Fabric Guard (Officially recommended by Sunbrella) or Star brite Waterproofing with PTEF
Alvacraft Pro-Tips for Longevity
-
Never Store Wet: Never fold up a Bimini top or button down a boat cover while the upholstery or canvas is damp. Trapping Southern humidity under a dark cover creates a greenhouse effect that grows heavy mildew within 48 hours.
-
Maintain the Hardware: Periodically apply a marine snap and zipper lubricant (like PTEF lubricant or Snap-Down) to prevent salt-air corrosion. Forcing a stuck snap can easily tear the vinyl or canvas right out of its backing.
